While some may argue a headstall is not an imperative part of riding a horse, the vast majority opt for some form of bridle or headstall when mounted. Ease, safety, and control are gained when the correct headstall is chosen. The design of each headstall is aligned with the riding or competition you have in mind. A quick change headstall may be in order when training at home and switching bits and tack out frequently. Similarly, a throat latch may be necessary as a working cowboy for added security, beads and silver are added to show headstalls for added flashiness.

What is a horse headstall?
A horse headstall is the part of a bridle that fits over the horse's head and holds the bit in place, essentially the framework of the bridle without the reins or bit included. It consists of a crown piece that sits behind the ears, cheek pieces that run down the sides of the face, and various adjustment points to ensure a proper fit.
What is a western bridle for horses?
A western bridle is a complete headgear assembly used in western-style riding that typically includes a headstall, a western bit and a single set of reins. It is distinguished by its heavier leather construction, decorative tooling or silver accents. Western bridles are designed for one-handed neck reining and are rooted in the functional traditions of ranch and trail riding.
What is the difference between an English and a western bridle?
The primary differences between English and western bridles lie in their design, construction, and intended use. English bridles are lighter, feature a cavesson noseband, a throatlatch, and are typically used with a snaffle bit and two-handed direct reining, while western bridles are heavier, more decorative, generally lack a noseband, and are designed for use with curb bits and one-handed neck reining. English bridles prioritize subtlety and close communication between horse and rider in disciplines like dressage and jumping, whereas western bridles emphasize durability, tradition, and the practical demands of trail, ranch, and pleasure riding.
How to put a western horse headstall together
- To assemble a western headstall, begin by identifying all the components: the crown piece, cheek pieces, browband, and any ear loops or slots if it is a one-ear or two-ear style.
- Thread the cheek pieces through the browband or ear loops as designed, then attach the bit to the bottom of each cheek piece using the bit loops or Chicago screws, ensuring the bit hangs evenly on both sides.
- Finally, attach the reins to the bit rings and adjust all buckles so the headstall sits correctly on the horse's head with the bit resting comfortably at the corners of the mouth without wrinkling or dropping too low.
How to measure a western headstall?
To measure a horse for a western headstall, use a soft tape measure to take several key measurements from the corner of the mouth, up the cheek, over the poll, and down to the corner of the mouth on the other side for the overall headstall length, and separately measure from corner of mouth to corner of mouth under the jaw for the bit width.
Most western headstalls are sold in sizes ranging from pony to full/horse to oversized or draft, and comparing your measurements against the manufacturer's sizing chart is the most reliable way to ensure a proper fit.
