"Awesome tank heater"
These not only keep the water from freezing, they keep the water temp warm enough to encourage the horses to drink during winter temps. I didn't realize how much difference this made until watching the horses refuse to drink the cold water as we filled the tank. I have never had my horses drink as much during the cold until using these. Since they turn off when not needed, they are perfect for our fluctuating Southern winters.
I bought one of these last year. Like the idea of lower voltage for smaller tanks for small pens of my sheep. However, the thing melted (plastic) when the animals drank the water down and it was half way out of the water. If you don't keep the trough full or have it on the bottom apparently, it stays hot in the cool air and melts. Really? Won't buy another until they make the cage out of metal.
When I ordered this water heater, I was very concerned that the cattle would flip it out of the water as it floated on top. I had already decided to take the ring off the top so that it would be submerged. Why not try it floating? I did. It floats just at the surface of the water and, so far, the cattle won't put their noses under the water to play with it. It keeps the tank clear of ice. I also love the fact that you can order different wattages for different size tanks. This is the first one like this that I have had. This is the best stock tank heater I've ever had. Only one drawback. It is large in diameter and must be used in an open tank. It's too big to use in the hog field drinker that has a screw on lid. I would definitely order this again.
"kept it warm"
I like these water heaters because they sink to the bottom and put the heat where its needed.
