What is VFD & Why Can't I Find My Antibiotics?

If you are confused about the new law that will go into effect in January and/or how VFD will affect you and your animals, we have tried to help with a brief overview here -

Cephapirin Benzathine

For intramammary infusion in dry cows only. Opti-Sert protective cap can be removed for full insertion or left on for partial insertion. Treat all quarters using a single dose syringe for each. Use no later than 30 days before calving.

Milk from treated cows must not be used for food during the first 72 hrs after calving. 42-day slaughter withdrawal.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule on July 3, 2008 prohibiting the extra-label use of cephalosporins (including ceftiofur in swine) in food-producing animals. The agency is issuing this order based on evidence that extra label use of these drugs in food-producing animals will likely cause an adverse event in humans and, as such, presents a risk to the public health. Public comment regarding the rule will be accepted until September 2, 2008 and the rule will go into effect on October 1, 2008.

This action would add cephalosporin antimicrobials to the list of drugs prohibited for extra-label use by the FDA. Given the recent approval of Baytril® for use in swine, it is important to remember that it too is among another class of drugs, fluoroquinolones, that are also prohibited for extra-label use in food animals.

Under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act (AMDUCA) drugs on this list may not be used under any circumstances in an extra-label manner even by a veterinarian.

    "Recommended by my farrier"

A farrier recommended this product and I delayed trying it d/t the cost. Finally got so frustrated with the other products out there and tried it. It is GREAT! I now use it as a preventative once a week during the wet Oregon winters and Jeffers had the best price! Thanks Jeffers!!!!

    "Its great!"

The mud is horrendous right now and thrush is a big problem. The cephapirin benzathine is not caustic and unlike copper-based products, it heals fungal and bacterial inflammation from thrush quickly and gently. Although it may seem pricey, it is more efficient and economical in the long run than any other products I've used!

    "Thrush be gone!"

I met a hoof expert at Equine Affaire last year. He told me this is best for thrush. I was skeptical, but soon his words came true. I spread the good word throughout the barn were I board Tad. Several others are using it with awesome results. If you have the same problem, this IS your answer!

    "Best thrush med around"

Cleared up nasty thrush in all four feet of my rescued boy who had his road shoes/pads on for waaaaay too long. Water and mud under the pads of hooves that should have been reshod months ago cleared up quickly. Will always keep this around my barn.

    "Great for Thrush"

I use for the prevention and treatment of thrush. This works great and a tube will treat multiple horses. Plus - no purple or green colored fingers.

    "great for thrush"

My go to for any bacteria infection on the hoof.....white line, thrush, abscess. Nothing works better or faster. The best part is you don't have to apply it long. It is MUCH cheaper than other medications because you don't have to use it near as long. LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff:)

    "Great for horse hoof thrush"

This is the easiest solution for horse hoof thrush. It doesn't stain like other purple options, and is gentle (not caustic). Great for inserting medicine into deep cracks. It does come out fast, so we use much more than we think we will.

    "Thrush WLD Eliminator!"

Sorry that this review is not related to the intended use of this product... However, if it works nearly as well on cows as it does for eliminating thrush / white line disease in horses, it is an excellent product! I tried everything to eliminate my horse's chronic thrush / WLD. This is the only solution I have found for him in year-round damp, northern FL, where he is out to pasture 24/7. Tomorrow helps keep his hoof ailments in check! The tubes are so handy for applying the medication - less waste, less on your hands / clothes. Great stuff.
