"Nice coat for my Nigerian goats"
I saw people were having trouble with sizing, however after measuring my goats and viewing the size chart the size I ordered fit perfectly. Keep in mind I have Nigerian Dwarfs so can’t tell you about how it would fit on a standard. Only complaint is don’t use it on nursing goats as the straps just won’t be able to coincide with udder down there. Worked great for the other girls though. Also we live in Florida so our winter is not as tough, therefore this might not be warm enough for very cold weather.
"Just a bit off"
The coats work well in the cold we get here which isn't sub zero, but the sizing is off. I use it on Angora's after shearing but the belly band is too tight for the pregnant ones, they can undo the Velcro sometimes too. Goats are very creative. I use the belly bands on other coats to close the fronts. The XL is big enough but even on a short backed Angora doesn't cover the butt. The elastic straps work well but the snaps turn the wrong way out somehow and do break easily. For Sacramento, CA they work well and are easy to wash the large amounts of mud we get here in the winter. They don't have to wear them long thankfully. Large works for the smaller goats.
We purchased these coats for our Angora goats to wear after shearing. They have worked well, especially once we folded and sewed the belly bands to make them narrower for the boys so they do not get wet. Our only complaint is that when the goats rub or scratch they sometimes catch the leg straps and break the plastic clasps. The coats slide off without the leg straps. We have borrowed straps from coats not in use but we will soon run out. I have called Jeffers twice to ask if replacement leg straps are available. No one has ever called back to tell me if I can get replacements or not.
"XL fits better"
Please see my last review for detailed comments. The XL does fit better...as long as your goat is medium-sized and not pregnant.
I just received my goat blanket today and am really disappointed at the weight/density. It's about the only winter blanket I could find for goats but it will definitely not help in these sub zero temps. I noticed that the belly band was very loosely sewn on when I took it out of the package (threads are loose) and when I tried it on her (over a sheet) the band threads just unraveled. It would be an easy fix but I shouldn't have to re-sew a brand new blanket. Will have to return.
"Many good points, but..."
They are sturdily made, easy to fasten, don't come undone when goats play with them, repel rain, and keep a goat warm in cool weather. I like my first one very much. BUT, the sizing is difficult -- I bought XXXL after reading a review and it is large in some ways, not in others - very long but the belly band is about right. I have dairy goats. So, the XXXL fits my goat who is 19"+ deep (that's hard to measure!), 37" chest to back of rump, 33" neck to tail. There is room left to expand the belly band on her for pregnancy. It is WAY too big for most of my does. Also, note that they won't be warm enough for serious (-20) cold weather (you could add a liner). The belly band is also too far back, which makes proper sizing difficult. I'll let you know how the XL fits!
