If your small pet feels that the exit is thru the smaller hole just cover the lil hole and the pet will know to exit in and out of main entrance, this is an excellent cubby bed for pets who like to snuggle under covers....
My cats always love to snuggle under my bed covers with me, so I thought they would like the feel of this, too. As soon as a put it on the floor one of them immediately jumped in and took a nap. It's big enough that the two of them can cuddle together in it. I don't think a day goes by that they aren't using this.
