I have these in every stall in my barn. They work well. The company that makes them is great to deal with if you do have a problem, but most problems people are having with the drain leaking are operator error. Yes they do have sloppy cheap chinese threads for the drain. It is very important to make sure it isn't cross threaded....it cross threads very easily. After you have tightened the drain plug run your fingernail around the plug where it seats to the bowl. If there is a bigger gap on one side than the other, you have it cross threaded & it will leak. If it is not cross threaded & still leaking put a little pipe dope or teflon tape on the plug and that should stop it if you have everything assembled correctly.
"Could be so much better"
We've had a couple of these over the years for our horses. Not the greatest quality, especially the plastic connecting pieces...even with Teflon tape, if the hose moves ever so slightly, this thing leaks like crazy. I wish the connectors were made of a durable hard rubber or galvanized steel. I also agree with another reviewer, the drain is small and has to be cleaned out each time you want to empty the bucket...which means cold, wet arms. Don't get me wrong...I'm in the barn, and getting dirty is part of the job, but a simple valve installed underneath that can be opened would be such a great idea. I'm ordering another one soon, as this is the only waterer with a drain...but this product could be made so much better.
This smells like really gross chemical I am sure anything that would drink out of it will eventually get cancer it is seriously awful when I asked to return it I was told I was the first one to ever complain about the smell. Give me a break, it stinks so bad you would have to be nuts to give it to any animal you cared about. I have owned for horses for 10 years have never had any kind of plastic bowl or anything stink the way this thing does. Two thumbs down!
"decent for price - Continued"
"(continued) ""We don't carry any spare parts for it but you can call the manufacturer at 850-526-7655 and ask for Charles, he can get what you need."" So if you need replacement parts, call that number and you can order them. Having said all that- I like this waterer. It's easy to assemble and install, and was really very easy to hard pipe and set up with a good drain that's plumbed outside the stall, to prevent wettng bedding when cleaning. If you have some basic plumbing skills, you can easily turn this basic waterer into a permanemt, sturdy, and easy to clean fixture for use inside a stall. Even if you plan to just attach a water hose and leave everything as is, it's pretty good for the price."
"decent for the price"
"I purchased these with plans to hard plumb them, not use a water hose, so I can't speak to using a water hose. Well, I will say that I've never liked using plastic connectors to attach anything to a metal water hose end- it's too easy to mess the threads up. If you're using a hose, be very careful when you screw it in, because if you mess the threads up, the connector will leak, as another reviewer mentioned. My initial thought is that the flap that covers the float valve, is awfully flimsy plastic. I'm wondering how it will hold up to my walking horses, who play with (and frequently destroy) anything they can get their teeth or hooves on... I wish it was metal, maybe galvanized steel or aluminum. Something sturdier. I may have a metal replacement cover made to fit it, if they break the plastic one. Regarding the plumbing- I wish the drain was bigger, the exit hole of the drain line is 1/2"". Will clog very easily. Also I don't like that the drain opens by putting your hand into the bowl and unscrewing the plug. I bought a 1 1/2"" threaded coupling, and replaced the bottom nut that holds the plug on, with this coupling, then hard piped a 3/4"" drain line with a valve. So to drain the bowl I just open a valve, dont' have to get my hands wet. I haven't done it yet by my plan to enlarge the drain opening bigger than 1/2"" is to cut off the nipple on the drain assembly, then drill out the hole to 3/4"", to minimize clogging. Even using it straght out of the box, you'll have to remove any hay or junk your horse has dropped into the bowl, before you drain it, or the drain will get clogged. I have hard water, and float valves get mineral deposits on them and stop working after a couple years at most. I asked jeffers about replacement float valve parts, and this was their response: ""We don't carry any spare parts for it but you can call the manufacturer at 8"
Have two for over a year and no problems one for a steer and horse.I put the steer low to the ground as so he can't butt with his head.I'm ready to buy another
"Leaks from the get go."
The plastic connecter is not compatible with the metal water hose connection piece. In short it leaks like an open faucet. So now we just have a very expensive water bowl that we still have to refill daily and refilling takes forever due to the float valve. This product is definitely not worth the money.
We bought two of these waters for our dog kennel and we are about to order more due to the quality.
"Simple and strong"
"This is a very simple, very strong waterer. I am mystified by anyone ""needing instructions."" The key to this product is strength and durability. We have had ours in the Alabama sun now for six months and it is holding up very well, still looks like new. The drain is important. Without it there would quickly be mold. Looking at the drain I just cannot see how it would leak, and if it ever did, just a simple washer from Home Depot would take care of it. This is real simple, just like water hose fittings. Is this one well made? Yes, it is. "
WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THIS WATERER. VERY STRONG AND DURABLE. I NOW HAVE 8 TOTAL AND WELL WORTH IT.
We bought two of these waterers. They come with very minimal instructions to set up and the drains leak terribly. I contacted the company that makes these directly and though they were helpful in sending directions to set up along with new drains to install...they still didn't work. These need to go back to the drawing board. I was very disappointed. :(
