Used correctly and at the right time, this trap catches more biting flies and I have ever seen. Note that I said biting flies. different types of traps catch different types of flies at different times in the season. at least where I live near the coast in Virginia we use the jar or bag traps first in the spring. Then in june they stop catching and you start to see a lot of flies. These are the biting flies. They will chew your dogs up and drive your horses nuts! You won't like them if they bite you either! Now is the time for the Star Bar bite free stable fly trap! They are best used in sun, must be less than 4 ft. off the ground, and must be kept away from switching horse tails!! But they work better than anything else for biting flies. I use them in my dog kennels, around my pastures and my chicken areas.
After suffering flies terribly at our new farm last year we decided to try some new methods and bought a lot of different products. I liked that this stick is large and can be hung or mounted outside on a pole (I found step in posts to be useful) but I was discouraged to find not so many flies and a lot of bees and other insects stuck in the glue. I unfortunately also caught a bat on one of the smaller traps (not this trap) and decided to throw them all out. I did notice that my chickens and some birds did come to pick bugs off the traps though, like another reviewer I wondered if the glue might harm them? I had better luck with the large bag traps outside and will continue to use them as well as those silly fly tapes in the barn and garage (they are cheap and they work!)
"better with attractant"
I bought this fly trap based on reviews, but found that it did not catch many flies. Only flies that chanced to land on it were caught. So, I put a little horse poop on the trays at the bottom and caught A LOT of flies! With a little attractant, this is a great fly catcher! (I caught no bees, FYI.)
This is great, because it has no poison, it works as a fly attractant and guinea fowl feeder all in one. My birds snack on the flies and provide more space for new flies . Please let me know if this can have any unwanted effect on my guineas.
"Great against flies but catches beneficial insects and birds"
Works but catches beneficial insects and birds This product works great as far as catching flies; however, after 1 week of hanging it I found over 20 bees on it which broke my heart. The beneficial bee population is quickly dwindling and we need all we can get. Additionally, I had this product last year and it caught a butterfly. Small birds can also stick to it. Starbar needs to change the formula so that the bees, birds and butterflies are not attracted. I took mine down and put it in the loft of the barn where it is out of the reach of beneficial creatures and insects.
My dogs and horses sre thrilled. I followed the instructions and in 3 days the stable flys were gone from the ears & muzzles of my dogs and the legs of my horses. I have already reordered and I won't be without them ever again!
"works pretty good"
This works alright but, the lid on mine kept coming off. However, I will use it again as, it did catch a bunch of bugs. I hung it near the water tank area....behind the fence so the horse couldn't get at it.
