I tried a rope nose type gag hack on my "petite" draft mare and it worked nicely to get collection and lightness. I bought this bit for her and it is ok, but I need bit guards on any type of gag type bit and in order to keep her from sucking them into her mouth and chewing them, I had to raise the bit higher. The nose piece gets too tight for her large head when I raise it high enough to keep the bit guards in place, even with the curb chain to the last link. It fits great on horses with a small to average sized head.
My only dislike is that the position to attach the bridle puts the straps very close to the eyes, I have to almost over-tighten the throatlatch to compensate.
a person that i used to ride with used this bit on nearly all of her horses. her horses were always throwing their heads and complaining about this bit. she wasnt able to ride them in any other bit because their mouths got hard from this bit. with any other bit they would take off and wouldnt stop until they got tired. most of this problem was the way she trained them but i have to say that this bit isnt one that i would reccommend to anyone with a horse that can ride in a lesser bit.
This bit works and gets the job done. However, I have found that with some horses the hackamore part of this bit is too stiff and tends to cut into the bridge of the nose. Also the loops for the bridle to attach put the bridle too close to the eyes for my comfort. Although, Its nice and keeps them supple if used with light suggesting hands.
