Cheeks extend up and down from mouthpiece, preventing the bit from slipping sideways through the mouth and exerting lateral control for turns. For safety, "keepers" should be used. Keepers make it less easy for the horse to catch the upper cheek on an obstruction. These bits fix the bit in the mouth and tend to concentrate pressure on the bars and tongue.
